Living With The Joy Of The Lord

What Does the Bible Say About Joy?

The Bible teaches us about true joy. Knowing and believing the Good News of the gospel is the key to experiencing the joy of the Lord, even in tough times. The Scriptures give us numerous examples and instructions about joy, showing that it is the will of God for us to be joyful – no matter what. He commands us to rejoice and causes amazing things to happen when we do. We are told to make a joyful noise, to have a joyful heart, and to take strength from the joy of the Lord.

True joy doesn’t come from ourselves or even from good things that happen to us – much as we may want to, we cannot produce joy. God is the source of the pure joy available to His people, the deep feeling in the soul that is produced by the Holy Spirit. As we see the bearuty of Christ in God’s Word and in the world around us, we look forware to the everlasting joy we will experience in heaven.

Christian joy is a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the beauty of Christ in the word and in the world.

John Piper

What Is Biblical Joy?

Joy has a unique meaning for Christians because we have what the world does not.

  1. God our Creator and Father: To know and be known by Him is far and beyond the greatest joy available to mankind. The knowledge and understanding of God’s good grace grows as we mature as Christians, filling us with inner joy.
  2. Christ Jesus: He took on death and won, becoming the rock of our salvation to all who accept Him as Savior. He gave us the gift of the kingdom of heaven where we will have fullness of joy forevermore.
  3. The Holy Spirit: He dwells in each of us, guiding us along the path of life, expressing the prayers we can’t put into words, and bringing us to conviction so we can repent of our sins.

The Christian’s Reasons For Joy

God expects us to rejoice. The Bible tells us that creation itself rejoices in the Lord.  The seas, the fields, and the trees resound, exulting with shouts of joy because the Lord is coming. He gives us each day, new every morning. He has put the breath in our lungs and keeps our hearts beating.

We should not worship anything or anyone except for the Lord God. He alone is the majestic King over all, and we gain strength and joy in God’s presence. Worshiping Him out loud is so invigorating and inspiring. We are told to make a joyful noise unto Him and to come before Him with joyful, and even loud singing. Knowing who He is and what He has done for us is reason enough for joyful worship. Our worship gives Him glory, when we express our hope of the glory of God. This is truly what we were made for.

God leads us and shows us the way we should go. He is our Helper, and He gets us through the shadows, the sleepless nights, the grief, and all of our tough times, bringing us into a place where we can again feel joy. After bringing our fears and anxieties to the Lord, we can rejoice because He can calm our hearts like nothing and no one else.

Jesus Himself encouraged His people to ask in prayer. When we believe, and come to Him asking, we will receive. When we look back the prayers we prayed, we can see the answers God provided. It’s all too easy to see a miracle and yet quickly forget the joy at seeing Him working in our lives. We should be able to look back with a joyful heart for what He did in the past, even as we ask Him to do it again. He never tires of our asking.

God has given us the Bible, His written Word, to guide and teach and convict us. We can be so thankful that we have so much of His heart in writing. Jesus gave us the living example of obedience to God. If we follow His example and stay under the protection of God’s commands, we will receive the gift of glorious joy. He tells us to be joyful in the hope that we have in Him. He is with us always and His presence fills us with joy and the peace of God.

We are to be thankful in joy because of God’s good grace and his love that endures forever. Strong and mighty Warrior that He is, He actually delights over us. God’s people know that He loves us and tenderly sings over us.
