Walking With God Quotes And Bible Verses

waling with God quotes and Bible verses

Just a closer walk with Thee
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea
Daily walking close to Thee
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be

author unknown

This famous old hymn by an unknown author begins with the words, “I am weak but Thou art strong.” These words, along with the rest of the hymn, speak of the troubles in the world and the need to cling ever closer to Christ Jesus on the walk through life.

Just like the song, the Bible speaks much of this close walk with God. I’ve put together a collection of “walking with God” quotes and Scriptures to help us understand the deep importance of this walk in the presence of the Lord God.

Walking With God By Faith

The walk through life is never an easy thing, but Jesus makes the very best traveling partner. As the song says, He shares our burdens, keeps us from temptation, and ultimately guides us to His kingdom. Here are some quotes and verses on walking with God by faith:

“A walk with God can move mountains. It can shake foundations and provide unbelievable solutions. Seek after His face and be great.”

Gift Gugu Mona

“There is nothing God doesn’t know about your life. You may know the past and present, but God also knows the future. Choose today to walk securely – not in what you know, but in what you believe.”

David Jeremiah

“Such true worship will stand the test of Christ’s great principle, “By their fruits you shall know them”. It sanctifies the Christian’s life, and makes them walk with God, lifting them above fear and love of the world. It enables a Christian to show God to other folks. Such worship comes from heaven, and has the mark of God upon it.”

J. C. Ryle

“Lord I am willing to walk with you, take my hand.”

Lailah Gifty Akita

Faith says not, ‘I see that it is good for me, so God must have sent it,’ but, ‘God sent it, and so it must be good for me.’ Faith, walking in the dark with God, only prays Him to clasp its hand more closely.

Phillips Brooks

Hebrews 11:5-6

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him

2 Corinthians 5:7

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Malachi 2:6 ESV

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Galatians 3:11

Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Hebrews 11:11

By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.

Walking With God In Obedience

Walking with God may take us to places we thought we never wanted to go. In the book of Daniel, we read about Daniel’s three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (otherwise known by their Hebrew names Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah)

They politely refused to worship a statue of the king, and were promptly thrown into a super-heated furnace to set an example by burning up for their noncompliance. The king, watching, was stricken to see them safely walking around in the fire. And somehow a fourth man had gotten in there. Who was he?

When the king finally let them out, the three were not burned or harmed in any way, with no evidence of having been incinerated. At this point the king made the assumption that a god had been in the fire with them. Actually, it was THE GOD, most likely Jesus, who walked with them through the fire.

We are never alone when, in obedience, we do things God’s way.

“Be the one who walks with the Lord”

Shellie Palmer

“A woman of God does not let the world dictate her walk with God. She lets the Word direct her to the Lord.”

Gift Gugu Mona

Suffering can refine us rather than destroy us because God himself walks with us in the fire.

Timothy Keller

“When the fleeting pleasures of sin are gone, then we remember the good ol’ days, when we enjoyed the sweet communion that we shared with our Redeemer.”

Royal Raj S

The most powerful, life-changing truths that God will teach us are only learned over a continuous process of daily walking with Him

Alisa Hope Wagner

1 Thessalonians 4:1-2 ESV

Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

Revelation 3:4

Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

Micah 6:8

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

Jeremiah 7:23

But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

God requires our obedience – no matter what. Jesus Christ demonstrated the utmost obedience when He went to the cross to save us all from ourselves.

God’s Word in the Bible is our guidebook and if we want a closer walk with Him, we must follow the commands of the Lord that have been given to us for our good and the glory of God.

The best news ever is that when we fail to walk in obedience to His Word, the grace of God has made the way for guaranteed forgiveness. This is such a great thing that we often can’t fathom it, and so we may fail to allow ourselves to be convicted, to confess our sin, or to repent of it, continuing in the sin.

This cycle of conviction by the Holy Spirit, confessing, and repenting needs to be repeated, possibly as a daily thing, by every single one of us. You are not the only one – I promise!

If you need to understand more about this concept of forgiveness, you can learn more in The Good News: The Gospel Of Salvation.

Walking With God In Relationship

Having a relationship with God is more than knowing the Bible, more than praying, more than studying Him. Being in relationship with God is experiencing the presence of God in our private walk.

A relationship with the Lord is all of the above with the addition of a sweetness that is indescribable. It is willing submission because we want to follow Him and be near Him. It is truly an intimate relationship that cannot be mimicked or faked or taken away.

“In walking with God it’s not about knowing the facts. Rather, it’s about knowing the God Who knows the facts.”

Craig D. Lounsbrough

“As you walk with Jesus, resting your head on His heart, you will learn to know His Word, His will, and His ways. You will want to obey Him, not out of forced compliance, but out of heartfelt connection. Your joy will abound as you remain in His love.”

Sue Detweiler

“A man who walks with God always gets to his destination.”

Henrietta C. Mears (also attributed to Henry Ford)

Our great tendency in this age is to increase our speed, to run faster, even in the Christian life. In the process our walk with God stays shallow, and our tank runs low on fumes. Intimacy offers a full tank of fuel that can only be found by pulling up closer to God, which requires taking necessary time and going to the effort to make that happen.

Charles R. Swindoll

Only by walking with God can we hope to find the path that leads to life. That is what it means to be a disciple. After all
aren’t we ‘followers of Christ’? Then by all means, let’s actually follow him. Not ideas about him. Not just his principles. Him.

John Eldredge

Micah 4:5 ESV

For all the peoples walk each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.

Leviticus 26:12

And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people.

Luke 24:15

While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.

John 1:14 ESV

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Psalm 119:1

Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord!

Walking in relationship requires us to be in close fellowship with God,. This is what He wants for us, because He knows that’s what is best for His children. The times when I’ve felt far from God, it’s always been me who has become distant.  Our Heavenly Father never leaves us, any of us, and when we are ready for Him, He always gives us the right of access to him, to walk in intimate relationship with Him.

Walking With God, Not In Our Own Direction

We often think we need to ask God to join us in what we are doing, and where we are going. No so. God makes it clear that we are to join Him where He is working and where He is going to truly be in step with Him.

If I walk with the world, I can’t walk with God.

Dwight L. Moody

Walking with God doesn’t lead to God’s favor; God’s favor leads to walking with God.

Tullian Tchividjian

It is a lesson we all need – to let alone the things that do not concern us. He has other ways for others to follow Him; all do not go by the same path. It is for each of us to learn the path by which He requires us to follow Him, and to follow Him in that path.

Katharine Drexel

How can you know when you are trusting in man rather than in God? If you fall apart when someone else lets you down, or if the actions of others affect your walk with God, then you know you are leaning on the arm of flesh!

David Wilkerson

As you walk through the valley of the unknown, you will find the footprints of Jesus both in front of you and beside you.

Charles Stanley

We like to control the map of our life and know everything well in advance. But faith is content just knowing that God’s promise cannot fail. This, in fact, is the excitement of walking with God.

Jim Cymbala

Jeremiah 6:16 ESV

Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

Deuteronomy 8:6

So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.

Isaiah 30:21

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

Galatians 5:25

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

I can’t say how many times in my life I’ve followed my own emotions instead of God’s direction. The Bible warns us time and time again to walk in the will of God, and follow His direction and not our own. As human beings, we often learn the hard way that the journey of faith is whichever way God is going.

Jesus is the light of the world, and He shines His light to show us the right way. The problem with us is that we get impatient, wanting to know ahead of time where He’s taking us. We must be ever watchful and patient, trusting that God Himself will show us God’s way in God’s timing, not in ours.

In Colossians 1:10, the Apostle Paul urges followers of Jesus “to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power,  to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins“.

And my friend, if you just skimmed over the previous verse, it’s worth going back over it. Not only are we told to walk with the Lord, but Paul tells us beautiful things will come out of this walk. I hope and pray that these walking with God verses and quotes are a help as you set out to walk with the Lord.
