Five Calming Prayers For Sleep

Trouble falling asleep at night can be nerve-wracking, and sometimes even a little frightening. Anxious thoughts running wild through our minds when we should be sleeping can be anxiety-producing. This is compounded by concerns of being too tired to handle the expectations of the coming day, when we are short on rest.

For some of us, this is a common reality, and for others, a rare difficulty. But whether you are plagued with insomnia frequently or just occasionally, you may find help in these prayers for sleep. Praying one of these Biblical prayers may be just what you need to get to sleep in the quiet of the night when it seems that everything but your mind is at rest.

I am not an expert on the subject, but as one who has spent my share of hours lying awake wondering if I’ll get any sleep at all before the alarm goes off, I want to offer, first, reassurance that you aren’t alone, and second, a few ways to bring the peace of God, along with some sleep, into your troubled heart at these times.

Sleepless Nights

Those nights spent wondering if you’ll ever get any sleep before morning can be grueling. You may try taking one deep breath after another, playing music, other calming sounds, or white noise, or any number of methods that are meant to help improve your sleep patterns.

These tricks often do work, but what about the nights when sleep eludes you? The harder you try to sleep, the heavier the weight of the world seems. A hard time getting to sleep can lead to racing thoughts and even feelings of fear that you will be exhausted and unable to function the following day.

Prayers For Sleep

The human mind is complicated and hard to figure out. But the Bible tells us that God is a merciful and good Father, and that He wants us to turn to Him for every need because He has all the answers and can supply everything we need – even sleep.

Often the reason we can’t fall asleep is because of the thoughts we are thinking. Paul tells us in Philippians 4:8 to “fix your thought on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise” (NLT). You might try reciting this or another Scripture, or repeating a soothing Biblical affirmation, either silently or aloud.

Simple Prayers for Wakefulness And Anxiety

Going to God with prayers for sleep may be a great help with falling asleep. There is no particular prayer to recite, since praying is simply talking to God. It’s that easy.  You don’t even need any special script or exact combination of words to do this.

Below, I have given you some ideas in these five different prayers for sleeplessness and anxiety. If you find yourself unable to sleep, you can use one of these prayers or speak to God naturally with words from your own heart, asking Him to come to your aid.

Prayer To Pray When You’ve Been Awakened By Bad dreams

Dear Heavenly Father,

I have been awakened with a disturbing dream and I can’t seem to get it out of my head. Will you fill my mind with comforting thoughts of you so that I can return to peaceful sleep with no dread or worries? Lord, you are a good Father, and you hold my life in Your hands. Please take this dream that I have had and replace the memories I have of it, with thoughts only of You. If there is anything I need to repent of or any action I need to take, will You convict me of these things, and if there is nothing more that I can do, I leave it all in Your hands. Lord, you can take this dream and the anxiety that it caused, and remove it from my thoughts. You are able to help me replace my fears with thoughts of peace. I ask You to please whisper sweet dreams into my thoughts tonight.

In the name of Jesus I pray,

Amen
