Times of loss and grief are an unavoidable part of life, moments nobody wishes to endure, often marking the darkest valley a person walks through. When we are in need of comfort from deep sorrow, the wisdom of Scripture offers solace and stability, guiding with words of comfort and strength.

The good news is that God in his infinite knowledge, knew we would all experience pain and loss. In his Word, he provided us with words of comfort, rest, and peace. His unfailing love and faithfulness are beacons of hope, guiding us through the dark shadows of grief.

12 Comforting Bible Verses

Within the pages of Scripture we find words that remind us of God’s enduring presence and the comforting love of Christ. From Psalms to Revelation, these verses tell of the Lord’s promises of comfort, assurance, and restoration. 

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. (ESV) 

Psalm 34:18

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (NLT)

Psalm 147:3

God speaks over and over of His nearness to us in suffering and of the healing he brings. He truly is the God of all comfort. He is not distant or indifferent to any of our suffering, but intimately acquainted with sorrow, and He understands the great pressure that grief weighs us down with. 

His good hope is not just for the present, but for the future – because when we put our hope in Him, He gives us the gift of eternal comfort. Forever in His care, not just now, but forever. 

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. Psalm 40:1-3

This passage speaks of the journey from despair to deliverance. If you are suffering, in sorrow or distress, know that the God of all grace can lift you out of this time of grief. He can once again put solid ground under your feet, putting a song of renewal and hope into your heart. 

The people around you will be able to see and trust Him when they hear you telling of what God did for you. Although you felt like your life was a waste, it turns out that God knows. He wastes nothing, but uses everything for your good and His glory. He is the God of all comfort. 

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. (NLT) 

Zephaniah 3:17

The comfort God gives is tender, as when a mother comforts her child. He is a Father of compassion, quieting our fears and comforting our souls. 

God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (NLT) 

Matthew 5:4

Jesus promises comfort to those who mourn. He is the source of all comfort, and even when we are empty and bereft, He is speaks words of comfort to our broken heart. 

Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (CSB) 

Matthew 11:28-30

When we are weary and burdened heavy with sadness, Jesus promises rest for our souls. Don’t hesitate to take him up on this wonderful promise. Go to him in prayer and ask him for the relief you seek from your heavy load. 

I leave you peace; my peace I give to you. I do not give it to you as the world does. So don’t let your hearts be troubled or afraid (NCV) 

John 14:27

The peace of God is far different than the peace the world has to offer. The peace of the world is temporary, and those who go after it end up empty and unsatisfied. In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. Romans 8:26-27

In times of loss our thoughts are muddled with grief and we often don’t have the strength or the words to pray. God’s Word promises that His Holy Spirit, who always knows our deepest needs, will intercede for us, laying each one of our specific needs before God. What a comfort to know that God has provided the way ahead of us. Always. 

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (CSB) 

Romans 15:13

Heartache leaves us hopeless, joyless, and muddled. God knows. He doesn’t push or pry. He uses the comfort of the Holy Spirit within the believer to light a spark, and then fan that spark into fresh, good hope. Our God of hope always knows what a weary soul needs.

1 Peter 5:7

Worries, fear, and anxiousness multiply when we feel we’ve lost everything and have no answers and no idea what lies ahead. Giving worries to God is not an easy thing to do, because it makes us feel helpless. Throughout the Scriptures, we are told to let God carry our burdens and our anxieties. If you’ve read the Bible you know this. Now is the time to put it into practice. You don’t have the answers you feel you need. God does. 

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (NKJV) 

Psalm 23

One of the most peaceful passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. This short, 6-verse chapter gives a wonderful example of God’s love. You may be in that valley of the shadow of death. But God is there with you. He will protect and comfort you. No matter where you are. No matter what. 

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. (CSB)

Revelation 21:4

Oh, to have our tears wiped away and no more grief or pain! We can look forward to the fulfillment of this beautiful scene with good hope as we wait for that coming glorious Day! In eternal glory, nothing from this earthly life will matter any more. You can trust the God of all comfort as you put your hope in Him alone.

God’s Comfort 

Whoever or whatever you grieve for, it is perfectly natural to feel overwhelmed and lost. Yet, as these Bible verses remind us, the Lord can heal broken hearts. God’s comfort and strength are always available. He doesn’t just offer comfort. He is comfort! And He is here right now and always, just for you.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Don’t forget – our God is the God of all comfort. Although we rarely know His reasons for allowing sorrow into our lives, the Bible tells us He has a purpose for everything. He turns everything to good. Nothing is wasted. We see in the above passage that one of His reasons for allowing us to suffer in grief is so that we can be a comfort to others who are in similar situations. 

We have a God-appointed purpose in every stage of life. Even when we feel we’ve lost everything, we still have the purpose that the God of hope appointed us to, knowing that in Him, we would be able to carry out His will for our lives.
